The Riitta and Jorma J. Takanen Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary by donating €280,000 to research projects at the Universities of Jyväskylä, Oulu and Vaasa, supporting technological industry expertise, regional vitality and international competitiveness.
In honor of its 20th anniversary, the Riitta and Jorma J. Takanen Foundation is launching a new collaboration initiative with the Universities of Jyväskylä and Vaasa, while continuing its long-term partnership with the University of Oulu. These collaborations reflect the Foundation’s enduring commitment to supporting research and innovation that are vital to the future of both northern Finland and the entire country.
The Riitta and Jorma J. Takanen Foundation has made donations that create genuinely long-lasting impact on regional research, expertise, and vitality. The projects selected for funding have exceptionally strong potential, developing solutions with both regional and international significance, from hydrogen economy safety and clean energy technologies to combating antibiotic resistance.
An Irreplaceable Role for Foundations in Research
Today, the role of the third sector in safeguarding academic freedom, enabling risk-taking and fostering innovation is more critical than ever. Finnish foundations supported science, arts and civic activities last year with a total of €594 million, and this amount has grown as public funding has decreased.
Foundations have become the single largest research funders in many fields. Their support brings stability at a time when economic and geopolitical uncertainties challenge long-term development.
A Nearly €5 Million Bequest Brings Hope
The Foundation also enjoys the trust of individuals. This year, the Riitta and Jorma J. Takanen Foundation received a significant individual bequest valued at nearly €5 million. This donation demonstrates strong confidence in the Foundation’s mission and long-term work.
